Comparison

Synthesized vs Tonic: how the two test data platforms compare

Synthesized and Tonic both mask, subset and generate test data, and both now mask unstructured documents. Choose Synthesized if your test data spans SAP S/4HANA or ECC and other enterprise applications, and you want tables and documents masked under one policy inside your own environment. Choose Tonic if you want to start self-serve on a free plan, mask documents without working through a vendor engineer, or need connectors for Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift or MongoDB.

SynthesizedTonic (as of October 2026)
Structured test data maskingFinds sensitive columns and replaces values deterministically: the same input always gives the same output, so foreign keys stay valid. Each original value gets one replacement in every table and connected system.Tonic Structural de-identifies databases with automatic PII and PHI detection, masking, synthesis, tokenization and format-preserving encryption. It keeps referential integrity and applies transformations consistently across database types.
Synthetic data generationGenerates new rows from your schema and the statistics of existing data, with all foreign keys valid. Also generates schema-valid XML from an XSD, linked CSV sets, and synthetic PDFs (bank statements, pay stubs, lab reports) with a true-value JSON file.Tonic Fabricate generates relational data, JSON, free text and files (PDF, DOCX, EML), from scratch or modelled on live databases, through a conversational Data Agent. It also builds mock APIs.
SubsettingBuilds subsets by ratio and filters, with all relationships intact. For SAP, it reduces test systems by business keys or dates, and time slicing keeps business processes complete.Structural subsetting, which Tonic describes as patented, produces smaller extracts with referential integrity.
Unstructured documents and messagesMasks PDF, DOCX and PPTX files (scans via OCR), mailboxes with attachments, chats, tickets, Slack and Teams exports, call transcripts, clinical notes, JSON, XML and logs. Uses the same policy and engine as table masking, with one replacement per person across every file in a run. Links to live database records are configured and verified per project. Document support is delivered engineer-led.Tonic Textual detects entities with proprietary NER models in 50+ languages, then redacts or synthesizes them. It handles CSV, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, images and audio. Self-serve, with a free trial.
SAP S/4HANA and ECCCovers S/4HANA, ECC and SAP HANA at application level, plus SuccessFactors, Ariba and Concur test copies. Reads SAP through OData (recommended) or a read-only HANA user. Nothing is installed in SAP. Sold on SAP Store.Tonic describes its SAP support as "database-level support via native connectors". Its Structural connector list names Oracle, SQL Server and Db2 for LUW. It does not name SAP HANA, S/4HANA or ECC.
Other enterprise applications and databasesSalesforce, Workday, Microsoft D365, ServiceNow, Oracle Applications, Oracle Fusion, Guidewire, Duck Creek, Temenos, Avaloq and Blue Yonder, with consistent values across SAP and non-SAP systems. Databases: PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Db2 LUW, SAP HANA, Snowflake and SQLite, plus CSV and XML files.Salesforce is the application connector on Tonic's integrations page. Other systems are reached through database, warehouse and file connectors, including Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift and MongoDB.
DeploymentRuns in your environment: on-premises, private cloud, hybrid or air-gapped, with Docker Compose or Kubernetes (Helm). No data is sent to Synthesized. Also sold through AWS Marketplace and Google Cloud Marketplace.Tonic Cloud (hosted) for all three products, with self-hosting on Enterprise plans. Textual can also run on-premises on Kubernetes or Docker and is sold on the Snowflake, AWS and Google Cloud marketplaces.
AI agent testingTest Data Agent (generally available) builds the PII-free data, relationships and system states needed to test AI agents before they reach live systems. It is triggered through REST APIs or CI/CD. Synthetic customers come with matching emails, chats and PDFs, including edge cases such as instructions hidden in documents.Built-in agents help users create and configure data: the Fabricate Data Agent, the Structural Agent and the Textual Agent. Tonic publishes a guide to synthetic data for agentic workflows.
Free tier and trialNo free tier, but a free trial is available on AWS Marketplace. Also free: a 30-minute SAP health check, sample documents, a test SSN generator and an SAP test system cost calculator. Paid, fixed-scope proofs: 48 hours on 50 of your documents (fee credited if you go ahead) and a 10-day SAP validation. SAP packages are listed from USD 42,500 a year.Fabricate Free plan: $0 a month, $5 of monthly credits, no credit card. Textual: free trial, then usage-based pricing. Structural: Professional and Enterprise plans through sales.
MCP and agent integrationMCP server, CLI, REST API and YAML configuration. Test Data Agent is framework-agnostic.MCP servers for Fabricate and Textual. The Textual MCP server was announced on 19 March 2026. Tonic says a Structural MCP server is in development.

Where Tonic is strong

Tonic sells three products that can be bought and used separately: Structural for databases, Textual for unstructured text and Fabricate for generating data from scratch. You can start without talking to sales. Fabricate has a free plan that needs no credit card, and Textual has a free trial and usage-based pricing. Textual is self-serve for documents and audio, and its NER models cover more than 50 languages. Fabricate's Data Agent builds datasets and mock APIs from a prompt, and Fabricate and Textual both have MCP servers. Structural connects to cloud warehouses and NoSQL stores such as Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift and MongoDB. Every product runs in Tonic Cloud, with self-hosting on Enterprise plans. If your data lives mainly in those systems, or you want to try a product hands-on today, Tonic is a strong choice.

Where Synthesized is different

Synthesized works at the level of the application, not only the database. For SAP it covers S/4HANA, ECC and SAP HANA. It reads through OData or a read-only HANA user, installs nothing in SAP, and reduces data by business process so documents and follow-on records stay complete. The same platform covers Salesforce, Workday, D365, ServiceNow, Oracle, Guidewire, Temenos and Avaloq, and keeps one replacement value per person across them. Documents, emails and chats are masked under the same policy as the tables. A project can be set up so that a customer renamed in the database gets the same new name in the PDF letter. Everything runs in your environment, including air-gapped sites, and no data is sent to Synthesized. Test data goes straight into Tricentis Tosca, UiPath and CI/CD pipelines. Test Data Agent builds the data and system states needed to test AI agents. Document support is delivered with Synthesized engineers today, so expect a guided start rather than a self-serve sign-up.

Corrections to Tonic's comparison
