Synthesized vs Delphix: how the two test data platforms compare

Delphix, part of Perforce, is built around full-size virtual copies. Synthesized is built around right-sized test data, masked, subsetted or generated at application level. Choose Synthesized for SAP data reduced by business process, documents masked with your tables, data production doesn't have, or a SaaS option. Choose Delphix for full virtual copies of large databases on demand.

ApproachMasks, subsets and generates test data at the level of the application as well as the database, then delivers it through an API, CLI or CI/CD pipeline into test environments and tools such as Tricentis Tosca and UiPath.Data virtualization: a compressed copy of each source feeds read-write virtual databases that teams can refresh, rewind, bookmark and branch. Masking runs in a separate engine, and Data Control Tower manages both. Delphix has been part of Perforce since March 2024.
Structured test data maskingFinds sensitive columns and replaces values deterministically: the same input always gives the same output, so foreign keys stay valid. Each original value gets one replacement in every table and connected system.Algorithms include secure lookup, segment mapping, mapping, tokenization (reversible) and free-text redaction. Profiling suggests an algorithm per column, and the mapping algorithm keeps outputs consistent across sources. Hyperscale Compliance is built for datasets of 10 TB and more.
Synthetic data generationGenerates new rows from your schema and the statistics of existing data, with all foreign keys valid. Also generates schema-valid XML from an XSD, linked CSV sets, and synthetic PDFs (bank statements, pay stubs, lab reports) with a true-value JSON file.Delphix Synthetic Data launched on 30 September 2026. Its documentation (26 October 2026) still marks it Early Access, says it reads schema metadata only, and lists limits including no self-referencing or circular foreign keys.
Subsetting and provisioningBuilds subsets by ratio and filters, with all relationships intact. For SAP, it reduces test systems by business keys or dates, and time slicing keeps business processes complete. Jobs are version-controlled YAML that run from CI/CD, so each test run can get fresh data.Perforce presents full virtual copies as the alternative to subsetting. Subsetting is stated for SAP HANA. Self-service bookmarks and branches let testers return to a known state.
SAP S/4HANA and ECCCovers S/4HANA, ECC and SAP HANA at application level, plus SuccessFactors, Ariba and Concur test copies. Reads SAP through OData (recommended) or a read-only HANA user. Nothing is installed in SAP. Sold on SAP Store.SAP-certified integration with NetWeaver and S/4HANA since 2021. Masking works at database level: a connector covers ECC and S/4HANA on HANA or Oracle, with an accelerator that pre-identifies sensitive fields. SAP's partner listing prices the SAP scrambling connector at USD 42,000 a year per asset.
Other applications, databases and mainframeSalesforce, Workday, Microsoft D365, ServiceNow, Oracle Applications, Oracle Fusion, Guidewire, Duck Creek, Temenos, Avaloq and Blue Yonder, with consistent values across SAP and non-SAP systems. Databases: PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Db2 LUW, SAP HANA, Snowflake and SQLite, plus CSV and XML files. Mainframe: Db2 for z/OS 13 and later, Db2 for i and VSAM.Masking connectors for Oracle, SQL Server, Db2 LUW, MySQL, SAP ASE, PostgreSQL and MariaDB, mainframe Db2 z/OS and Db2 for i, and mainframe data sets. Add-ons cover Salesforce and SAP HANA 2.0. Perforce cites more than 170 sources for the platform.
Unstructured documents and messagesMasks PDF, DOCX and PPTX files (scans via OCR), mailboxes with attachments, chats, tickets, Slack and Teams exports, call transcripts, clinical notes, JSON, XML and logs, with the same policy and engine as table masking and one replacement per person across every file in a run. Document support is delivered engineer-led.Masks structured files: delimited, fixed-width, XML, JSON and Parquet. Masking of PDFs, Word files, emails or chats is not stated.
DeploymentOn-premises, private cloud, hybrid or air-gapped, with Docker Compose or Kubernetes (Helm), or SaaS. Self-hosted deployments send no data to Synthesized. Also sold through AWS Marketplace and Google Cloud Marketplace.Customer-managed: Data Control Tower on Kubernetes or OpenShift, or appliances on VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or Oracle Cloud. A hosted SaaS is not stated.
AI agents and MCPTest Data Agent (generally available) builds the PII-free data, relationships and system states needed to test AI agents, triggered through REST APIs or CI/CD. MCP server, CLI, REST API and YAML configuration.Delphix AI runs a small language model inside the platform. An open-source MCP server is a community preview that Perforce says is not for production use. A product for testing AI agents is not stated.
Pricing, free tier and trialNo free tier, but a free trial is available on AWS Marketplace. Free: a 30-minute SAP health check, sample documents and test data tools. Paid, fixed-scope proofs: 48 hours on 50 of your documents and a 10-day SAP validation. Pricing: contact sales. No public price list or free trial; demos by request. Perforce says it prices by source data size.

Where Delphix is strong

Delphix is the established choice for data virtualization. Teams get full-size, read-write copies of production databases without storing full physical copies, and can refresh, rewind, bookmark and branch them, which suits debugging and parallel test streams. Masking stays consistent across sources and runs at very large scale with Hyperscale Compliance. Source coverage is wide, including mainframe Db2 z/OS, and its SAP integration has been SAP-certified since 2021. Data Control Tower governs virtualization and masking in one place, it deploys on most clouds and hypervisors, and Perforce names financial firms such as BNP Paribas, Virgin Money and Mizuho Securities as customers. If you want full virtual copies of large databases on demand, Delphix is a strong choice.

Where Synthesized is different

Synthesized gives each test the data it needs rather than a full copy. It subsets by business process, so an SAP order arrives with its deliveries, billing documents and postings, and it generates data production doesn't have, such as new products or rare edge cases. For SAP it works at application level through OData or a read-only HANA user, installs nothing in SAP and is sold on SAP Store. The same masking rules and replacement values cover Salesforce, Workday, D365, ServiceNow, Oracle, Guidewire, Temenos and Avaloq, plus mainframe Db2 for z/OS, Db2 for i and VSAM, and documents, emails, chats and call transcripts are masked under the same policy as the tables. It runs on-premises, including air-gapped sites, or as SaaS. Test data goes straight into Tricentis Tosca, UiPath and CI/CD pipelines, and Test Data Agent builds the data and system states needed to test AI agents. Synthesized does not virtualize databases, and delivers document support with its engineers today.

Questions about Synthesized and Delphix

What is the main difference between Synthesized and Delphix?

Delphix virtualizes databases: it gives teams full-size virtual copies they can refresh, rewind and branch, and masks them. Synthesized masks, subsets and generates right-sized test data, works at application level for SAP, and masks documents and messages under the same policy as the tables.

Is Synthesized or Delphix better for SAP test data?

Delphix masks SAP at database level, with an SAP-certified integration and a connector for ECC and S/4HANA on HANA or Oracle. Synthesized works at application level: it reads through OData or a read-only HANA user, installs nothing in SAP, reduces data by business process and is sold on SAP Store. Compare both on your own SAP sandbox, for example with a 10-day validation.

Does Delphix generate synthetic data?

Perforce launched Delphix Synthetic Data on 30 September 2026. Its documentation, dated 26 October 2026, marks it Early Access and lists limits such as no circular foreign keys. Synthesized generates rows from your schema and existing statistics with all foreign keys valid, plus schema-valid XML, linked CSV sets and synthetic PDFs.

What are the alternatives to Delphix?

It depends on why you use Delphix. For SAP data reduced by business process, documents masked with your tables, generated data or a SaaS option, Synthesized. For entity-based self-service with reservation and rollback, K2view. For mainframe-heavy estates, Broadcom Test Data Manager, IBM Optim, Synthesized and XDM name Db2 z/OS support. See best test data management tools for banks.

Which handles mainframe test data?

Both. Delphix masks mainframe Db2 z/OS, Db2 for i and mainframe data sets. Synthesized supports Db2 for z/OS 13 and later, Db2 for i and VSAM, alongside Db2 LUW, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SAP HANA and Snowflake.
